Senior Field Service Engineer Leader

Starting with a love of electronics, Miguel Asuncion Torres Sanchez joined Averna in 2012 as a technician. He continued his education throughout his career and has since received his degree in Industrial Engineering and Administration. Today, Miguel is an invaluable member of the Business Continuity Servies (BCS) team and continues to grow and excel. This is in part due to his incredible enthusiasm, passion and love of learning.

Q: Where were you before Averna and how did you get here?

A: I started in the world of electronics at a very young age. Even before having a formal job, I was already working on small electrical and electronics-related projects. Later, I gained hands-on experience working in an electronics manufacturing environment in Guadalajara at the beginning of 2007. Although I transitioned into Industrial Engineering, I never completely distanced myself from electronics.

My passion for technology and electronics always drove me to keep learning and applying my knowledge in different areas, gradually shaping the path that led me to where I am today. In mid-2012, during a meeting, a colleague mentioned an opportunity at Averna. I decided to apply, and after a couple of interviews, I was introduced to the industry from a new perspective. This experience sparked my interest in continuing to learn and grow within this field, ultimately leading me to my current role.

Q: What attracted you to Test Engineering & Field support?

A: As I mentioned earlier, I have always been inclined toward technology and electronics. Since I was very young, I have been fascinated by understanding how equipment and machines work. It has always been a natural interest for me, something that was never forced. When you truly enjoy something, you naturally find the time to keep learning, trying to solve problems. It wasn’t something I actively sought, but it has always been something I have genuinely enjoyed.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of your current role?

A: One of my favorite aspects of my current role is the opportunity to solve complex technical challenges while working closely with different teams across various regions. I enjoy troubleshooting and identifying issues, whether remotely or on-site, and ensuring that our systems operate efficiently. Additionally, I appreciate the continuous learning that comes with working on diverse projects, as well as the chance to share my knowledge and experience with my teammates. The dynamic nature of the role keeps me engaged and motivated every day.

Q: Is test engineering a more challenging field to manage considering the different types of projects and industries we focus on?

A: Yes, test engineering can be quite challenging to manage, especially considering the variety of projects and industries we focus on. Each project comes with its own set of requirements, technologies, and standards, which means we constantly need to adapt and expand our knowledge. Additionally, working across different industries requires a deep understanding of specific testing methodologies and compliance requirements. However, these challenges also make the field exciting, as they provide opportunities for continuous learning, innovation, and problem-solving.

Q:  Have you had any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, what you believe in and what you’re committed to in your work and life?  Tell me about them.

A: Throughout different stages of my life, I have encountered various individuals who, while not necessarily mentors, have played a significant role in shaping me, both personally and professionally. During my years at Averna, I am grateful to those who placed their trust in me and saw potential in me that I didn’t initially recognize.

These individuals have helped me grow in my professional environment, guiding me to develop skills and confidence in ways I hadn’t imagined. I admire and respect them for their support and leadership. Over the years, they have also introduced me to a way of working that I was previously unfamiliar with, which has significantly contributed to my professional development

One particular moment that stands out was during my early years at Averna when I was assigned a challenging project in which I initially doubted my own abilities. A manager and my team lead, who saw potential in me, encouraged and pushed me to take on the challenge, assuring me that I had the necessary skills to succeed.

Throughout the project, they consistently provided guidance, shared their experience, and pushed me to think critically and trust my own abilities. Thanks to their support, I was able to overcome the challenges and deliver the expected results.

That experience not only gave me more confidence in myself but also changed the way I approach new challenges, seeing them as opportunities rather than obstacles. This lesson has stayed with me ever since, and now I strive to offer the same support and motivation to my teammates.

Q: Do you feel you achieve a good work/life balance?

A: Right now, no. I believe I am in a stage where I need to be highly active professionally. However, I am trying to find a better balance. It has been difficult dividing my time between my family, my master's degree, and my job.

Q: What are you most proud of?

A: Definitely reaching the point where I am today—my family, my job. I never imagined that I could get to where I am now. It has been a challenging journey, but with the support of my wife and the opportunities I have been given throughout my professional career, it has become a reality. I just want to keep moving forward.

Q: What have you learned from Averna that will be a takeaway for the rest of your life?

A: One of the most valuable lessons I have learned at Averna is adaptability. Working on diverse projects, collaborating with teams across different regions, and solving complex challenges has taught me the importance of being flexible and open to learning new things. I have also learned how crucial teamwork and trust are in achieving success. I have had the opportunity to work with amazing colleagues who have helped me grow professionally.

Additionally, problem-solving has become a core skill for me, understanding issues, thinking critically, and finding solutions efficiently. These experiences have shaped the way I approach challenges, and I am confident that these lessons will stay with me throughout my career and personal life.
